Learning Danish can be difficult, and you need to make an effort to become proficient in understanding, speaking, writing, and reading the Danish language.
But once you have learned Danish, you will find that life in Denmark opens up even more for you, because you can talk to the people you meet on your way - whether it is at your children's daycare or school, at a party, at work or school, or in the supermarket queue. You will be able to understand Danish TV, radio, and podcasts, read newspapers, and generally keep up with Danish society and everyday life.
Here are our tips on how you can learn the Danish language quickly:
- Be proactive and learn the most common Danish words. We have a suggestion of 10 good words and phrases here.
- Take classes. It’s an excellent idea to get Danish lessons from an experienced language teacher trained in teaching Danish to international citizens. A language teacher knows the best approach to learning Danish, so progress comes quickly. When you receive Danish lessons from trained and skilled teachers, you get a quick and competent introduction to the Danish language and the best start to learning the language.
- Talk, talk, talk - Even if your Danish is not perfect, just speak. It is the best way to improve your Danish. Speak Danish whenever you get the chance - at the grocery store, in the café, or at the sports club. Even saying a few words here and there improves your skills.
- Say no to English. If you know you can say what you want to say in Danish, insist on speaking Danish. Even if the person you are talking to suggests that you can speak English, be clear that you want to learn the language, and it helps you if you speak Danish.
- Be curious - Look up Danish words and phrases that you don't understand in a dictionary and note their meaning. You tend to remember things better when you also write them down.
- Watch Danish TV shows and movies - and turn on the subtitles so you can both listen and read at the same time. If you can get access to watch the classic "Matador," you get an introduction to Danish culture and history AND you will hear people pronounce Danish words and phrases slowly and thoroughly. You can find the series on DR’s website
- Listen to Danish radio and podcasts and read Danish magazines - Get the sound of the Danish language in your ears and get used to reading Danish letters, words, and phrases.
- Be aware of what is difficult for you. If there are particular words or sounds that you find difficult to pronounce, record a Danish friend or teacher saying the words or sounds, listen to the recording over and over, and repeat what you hear. You can also record your own pronunciation and compare it with an earlier recording to see if you are getting closer.
- Challenge yourself. Sometimes it’s a matter of making a decision: Today I will speak Danish with a Dane. Once you have decided to speak Danish, go to the library, to the bakery, or talk to your neighbor and stick to Danish, even if they might switch to English.
